The Nicklaus Course

Recognized as the “Best New Private Course in America” in 1993 by Golf Digest, a “Top 100” course by Golf Magazine, “Top 100 Residential Golf Course” by GolfWeek, and as the “Best New Remodel” by Golf Digest, the Nicklaus course delivers a formidable yet rewarding golf experience and offers a scenic set of finishing holes. Nicklaus has used his prestigious talents to create 18 visually spectacular golf holes with traditional approaches, while placing a premium on strategy and shot-making. The Nicklaus course is as visually stunning as it is challenging. “Colleton River reminds me of Cypress Point. It has as many elements as any golf course on the East Coast,” says Nicklaus. Legendary tour pro and fellow golf course architect Greg Norman says that Colleton River is the best effort in the Golden Bear’s entire design portfolio. The Nicklaus Course at Colleton River strikes an exceptional balance between challenge and playability. Nicklaus tempts golfers throughout, providing glimpses of the marsh on the front nine before finishing the round in dramatic fashion exposed to the winds and scenic vistas provided by the Colleton River. In 2017 the Nicklaus Course underwent a remarkable restoration unearthing its original classic Lowcountry beauty.  

Signature Holes: The par-5 6th hole is one of the most iconic on the Nicklaus Course, with a dogleg left that requires a well-placed tee shot to set up a challenging approach over water to a small, elevated green. The par-3 12th hole is another highlight, with a picturesque view of the marshlands and a green that is guarded by water on three sides.

The Nicklaus Course is more forgiving than the Dye Course but still presents its own set of challenges. The layout features wide fairways, large greens, and fewer but more strategically placed bunkers. Water hazards come into play on several holes, requiring careful shot planning. The course’s design emphasizes the natural beauty of the Lowcountry, with holes that wind through marshes, forests, and along the Colleton River.

    The Dye Course

    The Dye Course is known for its dramatic design, featuring rolling fairways, large waste areas, and Dye’s trademark railroad ties. The course is designed to test every aspect of your game, with strategically placed bunkers, water hazards, and undulating greens that require precision and thoughtful shot selection.     Signature Holes: The par-4 7th hole is one of the most memorable on the course, with a challenging tee shot over a marshland to a narrow fairway, followed by a demanding approach to a green protected by bunkers and water. The par-3 17th hole is another standout, offering breathtaking views of the Colleton River with a green that is almost entirely surrounded by water. It’s a hole that demands accuracy and nerve.

    The Dye Course is maintained to the highest standards, with fast, true greens and perfectly manicured fairways. The course’s natural beauty, combined with its challenging layout, makes every round a unique experience.  The course was restored in 2016 and is now more spectacular than ever. The Dye Course is a par-72 layout measuring 7,171 yards from the back tees, including the par-4 18th hole measuring 490 yards from the championship tees.
