Dolphin Head is a Gary Player masterpiece that holds the distinction of being the first golf course built within Hilton Head Plantation when it opened in 1974. The course is revered by both locals and visitors, showcasing Player’s philosophy of harmonizing golf with nature. His design emphasizes the preservation of the area’s natural features, creating a picturesque and playable course that has become a cherished gem in the Lowcountry golf scene.

Dolphin Head offers a unique  experience with  two distinctive nines. The front nine is characterized by shorter holes that wind through tall trees, demanding precision and accuracy rather than length.  Gary Player’s signature bunkers and the presence of marshland add to the challenge. In contrast, the back nine opens up into more expansive spaces, framed by towering old-growth trees. This part of the course allows you to open it up a bit, but still places a premium on hitting fairways and greens, especially with the presence of water hazards on many holes.

In 2010, Dolphin Head underwent a significant renovation under the guidance of course architect Clyde Johnston. This renovation included the introduction of Celebration Bermuda grass on the tees and fairways, and Mini-Verde Bermuda on the greens. The updated playing surfaces have enhanced the course’s playability while maintaining its classic charm.

One of the standout features of Dolphin Head is its commitment to preserving the natural environment. Gary Player’s original design used minimal landfill, allowing the course to blend seamlessly with its surroundings. This philosophy continues to be reflected in the course’s layout, where natural beauty is ever-present and carefully integrated into the playing experience.

In addition to the excellent facilities, including a well-appointed clubhouse,  pro shop, and practice areas, Dolphin Head recently added the S2: Sim and Sports Lounge with Trackman.  The new simulator allows you to Leverage cutting-edge technology to analyze and improve your swing with detailed feedback while playing courses Pebble Beach, Augusta National, and St. Andrews.  These amenities, coupled with the course’s unique design and natural beauty, make Dolphin Head a standout destination for locals and visitors alike.

Signature Hole:

• Hole 12: The signature par-3 12th hole is a true highlight of Dolphin Head. Offering breathtaking views of Port Royal Sound, this hole requires a precise tee shot to a green that is closely guarded by water.
